Foram realizados investimentos em investiga\u00e7\u00e3o para o desenvolvimento de fontes alternativas e biocombust\u00edveis. Entretanto, quase quarenta anos depois, ou seja, em 2006, a percentagem de utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o de combust\u00edveis f\u00f3sseis, nomeadamente petr\u00f3leo, carv\u00e3o mineral e g\u00e1s natural, representava cerca de 82% de todo o consumo de energia mundial, segundo dados do Banco Mundial.<\/p>\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h1>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Actualmente, e passados cerca de vinte anos desde 2006, embora se observe uma evolu\u00e7\u00e3o positiva, sobretudo na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de electricidade a partir de fontes limpas, os combust\u00edveis f\u00f3sseis continuam a ter um peso determinante na matriz energ\u00e9tica mundial, representando aproximadamente 80% do motor log\u00edstico e industrial global. Isto demonstra que as energias limpas, nomeadamente as energias renov\u00e1veis e a energia nuclear, s\u00e3o respons\u00e1veis por cerca de 20% da matriz energ\u00e9tica global.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Importa aqui clarificar a distribui\u00e7\u00e3o do peso destas fontes, nomeadamente: o petr\u00f3leo (cerca de 36%), o carv\u00e3o mineral (27%), o g\u00e1s natural (23%), a energia nuclear (8,5%) e a energia hidroel\u00e9ctrica (6,3%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A transi\u00e7\u00e3o energ\u00e9tica tem um fundamento predominantemente econ\u00f3mico, embora muitas vezes os seus objectivos sejam apresentados sob o argumento da sustentabilidade ambiental. Ou seja, o objectivo da descarboniza\u00e7\u00e3o, que visa mitigar o aquecimento global atrav\u00e9s da redu\u00e7\u00e3o das emiss\u00f5es de gases com efeito de estufa, \u00e9 essencialmente ambiental. J\u00e1 os objectivos relacionados com a seguran\u00e7a e independ\u00eancia energ\u00e9tica \u2014 que visam reduzir a depend\u00eancia de pa\u00edses detentores de reservas e com grande capacidade de influ\u00eancia na produ\u00e7\u00e3o de combust\u00edveis f\u00f3sseis \u2014 bem como o objectivo da inova\u00e7\u00e3o tecnol\u00f3gica, s\u00e3o essencialmente econ\u00f3micos.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Ou seja, o custo e o retorno do investimento em energias limpas determinar\u00e3o o ritmo da transforma\u00e7\u00e3o da matriz energ\u00e9tica global. E digo isto olhando para os principais entraves a uma transi\u00e7\u00e3o total, que considero pouco prov\u00e1vel nos pr\u00f3ximos 50 anos.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Os custos elevados com infra-estruturas, a intermit\u00eancia das fontes limpas devido \u00e0 depend\u00eancia de factores clim\u00e1ticos \u2014 o que exige grandes sistemas de armazenamento e centrais t\u00e9rmicas complementares \u2014, assim como a depend\u00eancia econ\u00f3mica e social, os desafios na cadeia de abastecimento e a densidade energ\u00e9tica e armazenamento permitem-me afirmar, sem sombra de d\u00favida, que \u201ca transi\u00e7\u00e3o energ\u00e9tica \u00e9 irrevers\u00edvel, mas os combust\u00edveis f\u00f3sseis continuar\u00e3o a ser o motor log\u00edstico e industrial do mundo\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">O facto de o debate p\u00fablico sobre a transi\u00e7\u00e3o energ\u00e9tica ter tido in\u00edcio na d\u00e9cada de setenta e a matriz global continuar a ser predominantemente dominada pelos combust\u00edveis f\u00f3sseis n\u00e3o nos permite considerar o processo como um insucesso.
